From utilising natural resources to solutions that respect both humans and the environment! There is a direct line from Det danske Hedeselskab (DDH), founded in 1866, to Orbicon’s present day activities. DDHs early activities were mainly irrigation projects and geological explorations aimed at mapping soil conditions and identifying natural resources such as peat and lignite deposits. For many years the company also worked on reclaiming marshes, bogs and ponds for agricultural purposes, and drainage and watercourse regulation. These activities gave DDH a unique insight into Danish geology. From the 1970s, attitudes towards the utilisation of natural resources and the environment began to change. As a consequence, DDH used its extensive knowledge of soil conditions, water and nature in general to develop a consultancy service complying with society’s demands for the improvement of the natural and aquatic environments through nature rehabilitation, nature preservation and the physical improvement of watercourses. In the late 1980s, efforts became concentrated on treating sewage from cities, while the focus in the 1990s was on combating soil pollution and ensuring quality of drinking water. At the same time, DDH accumulated extensive competencies in consultancy services on sewage treatment and the exploration and remediation of contaminated land. DDH Consulting A/S was de-merged from DDH in 1999, with the aim of forming an independent company that could focus on DDHs strengthened development of environmental activities. In 2006 DDH Consulting changed its name to Orbicon. Since then, the company has worked to develop its competencies in order to keep pace with the rapid changes in the environment in both the Danish and international markets. Among other things, Orbicon has purchased smaller companies to help build on and improve competences in marine environmental exploration and monitoring, and in geophysical exploration of the underground. Orbicon has also strengthened its competencies in sewage and water supply technology. In later years, Orbicon has endeavoured to develop a wider set of competencies that can ensure a holistic approach to solutions. This is the background for the continued development of activities in areas such as the working environment, evaluation and analysis, and construction consultancy services. These are all competencies that support Orbicon’s efforts to create solutions that ensure that society’s utilisation of natural resources respects both humans and the environment. |
