Natura 2000

Natura 2000

We do Natura 2000 impact assessments for landowners and developers!

Today, Natura 2000 is a central term in management of all nature in Europe. Natura 2000 has an effect for authorities as well as for private landowners, developers and industry.

When is an impact assessment required?

Natura 2000 protected areas, which include protected areas for both habitats and birds, are to be administered so that the natural environment is not impaired. Among other things, this means that authorities must ensure that any activity that may affect a Natura 2000 area, and which requires permission, approval or dispensation, must be evaluated with respect to whether or not it will harm the protected natural environment in question.

In practice this means that a private landowner or developer who wishes to establish, replace or expand a building, plant, or the exploitation of resources in or near a Natura 2000 area will be required to provide documentation stating that the project will have no significant negative consequences for the types of natural environments and species for the protection of which the area has been designated.

We prepare impact assessments for a number of developers, enterprises and planners in connection with:

  • Wind farming on land
  • Harbours, off-shore wind farms, and submarine cables
  • Golf courses, campgrounds and other land uses
  • Roads and other construction activities in the countryside
  • Extraction of raw materials
  • Construction of homes and summer homes

The rules apply not only to the areas designated under Natura 2000, but also for activities outside them, if these activities can have negative impacts for the Natura 2000 areas.

Reliable documentation on time

We ensure that impact assessments are prepared on time, and that they live up to valid requirements and guidelines. We base our impact assessments on documentable and reliable data for the relevant species and types of natural environments.

We build on strong professional expertise on the natural environment and birdlife [link: Terrestrial environments], combined with many years of experience in assessing effect of construction projects on the environment.

Unequivocal recommendations

We guarantee final reports with unequivocal conclusions and recommendations for use by the developer and public authorities.

Where are the Natura 2000 areas?

The Natura 2000 areas cover the protected areas for birds and habitats designated by the EU. Learn more about Natura 2000 and the birds and habitate directives on EU web side

On the Danish Forest and Nature Agency’s website, you can find a map of Danish areas and see if your project may be covered by Natura 2000 rules
