Nature protection and rehabilitation

Rehabilitation of rivers, wetlands and lakes

Orbicon provides professional expertise in all areas of rehabilitation of rivers, lakes and wetlands. This includes preliminary project design, biological and technical investigations, drawing up of scenarios for different rehabilitation solutions including socio-economic aspects, implementation and ongoing monitoring.

In a national context the company is among the forerunners in river and lake rehabilitation and has extensive experience from wetland rehabilitation projects in both Denmark and abroad, hereunder preparation of management plans for large-scale wetlands of international ecological importance, e.g. Ramsar sites.

Sustainable management of natural resources and protected areas

Appropriate management of natural resources and protected areas must be based on a thorough knowledge of species, habitats and possible conflicts between nature protection and human interests in the specific sites. The company has particular experience in data handling, statistical analyses, and model-ling. Orbicon also has broad experience in the implementation of international environmental agreements on natural resources management, particularly EU directives on nature protection and related conventions.

Natura 2000

Orbicon assists new and future EU member states in their efforts to implement the Natura 2000 network of protected areas - from the initial process of preparation of national lists of candidate Natura 2000 sites over final designation of selected sites to their future conservation and management. This implies e.g. training and capacity building of site management authorities, preparation and dissemination of public awareness raising campaigns, monitoring of conservation status, development of species and site management plans, and assessment of investment needs and funding possibilities.

As an invariable part of Natura 2000 management an impact assessment is required where a project or plan may give rise to significant effects upon a Natura 2000 site. Orbicon has extensive experience in preparation of impact assessments in conformity with the Habitats Directive - “Article 6 assessments” - for authorities and developers. In cases where a plan or project are subject to the EIA or SEA directives the Article 6 assessment may form part of these assessments.

Natura 2000 in the
Czech Republic
Orbicon has provided technicalassistance to the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic regarding implementation of the Natura 2000 Network. Guidelines for 15 Protected Landscape Areas and National Parks were elaborated. All sites were proposed as Special Areas of Conservation and/or Special Protection Area according to the Habitats and Birds Directives. The project included capacity building for the management of these sites, as well as raising awareness of local communities and visitors about nature conservation and the value of Natura 2000 sites.
