Reference: The Bug River as an Ecological Corridor in the Pan European Ecological Network; 2006-2008.22-02-2010
Belarus, Poland and Ukraine

The overall objective of the project was to establish a transboundary co-operation on biodiversity protection along the Bug River and to lay the base for the Bug River as an ecological corridor in the Pan European Ecological Network. The immediate objectives of this project were to:

  • Gain insight in the policy needs and wishes of the three countries related to the Bug River.
  • Build understanding about Pan-European Ecological Networks, the EU Water Framework Directive and Natura 2000 as well as the Man and Biosphere Program of the UNESCO.
  • Increase capacities of the NGOs and science organisations related to nature and water management of the Bug River.

The main project outputs were a feasibility study including national status reports regarding protection and management of the Bug River and a transborder Action Plan for the protection and management of the Bug River. The project was finalised with an International Conference on the River Bug.

The project partners were Wageningen DCI and Orbicon together with the local units of IUCN in Poland, Wetlands International in Ukraine and the Birdlife partner APB in Belarus.

Funding Agency: Dutch BBI/Matra.
