The overall objective of the project was to protect and manage key biodiversity along the Sava River through supporting the Sava countries in establishing an ecological network. The project outputs included:

Methodologies for data gathering and data storage in line with the EU Birds and Habitats Directives

Areas valuable for nature conservation and potential Natura 2000 sites identified through field inventories of Natura 2000 habitat types and indicator species

Preliminary proposal for an ecological network with focus on core areas developed

Increased knowledge and capacities of experts from Croatia and Serbia (and Bosnia-Herzegovina) on the EU Birds and Habitats Directives.
The outputs allowed the Ministries responsible for nature conservation in the Sava countries and the stakeholder groups to emphasize the need to integrate nature protection into the river basin management planning. It also increased the capacities in implementing the EU Birds and Habitats Directives and in identifying areas important for nature conservation from a European perspective.
Orbicon carried out the project together with Wageningen DCI (lead), Faculty of Natural Sciences in BiH, IUCN ROfE and the Institutes for Nature Conservation in Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.
