 | | 22-02-2010 | | Estonia and Latvia | | | | | | The project enhanced trans-border co-operation between Estonia and Latvia in the field of protected areas and water management on a watershed level. The project produced an integrated trans-border management plan for the protected areas on both the Estonian and Latvian side of the border. The management plan includes guidelines and recommendations for integrating transborder water management with nature friendly agriculture, close-to¬-nature forestry practices and nature protection in line with the EU Birds and Habitats directives. In addition, the project supported the designation of a bilateral Ramsar site. To secure support and understanding of the project outputs, a trans-border Steering Committee was established with representatives of the relevant ministries in Latvia and Estonia as well as regional and local authorities.
The project was implemented by Wageningen DCI (lead), Orbicon, North Vidzeme Bioshere Reserve in Latvia, Nigula Protected Area in Estonia and Wetlands International.
