Sludge Reed Bed Systems

Making nature work for you

Sludge treatment in reed bed systems is a thoroughly tested method with a number of advantages. It uses very little energy and no chemicals, has a minimum of CO2-emissions, provides a good environment, and reduces sludge residue significantly. It is the environmental friendly and cost efficient choice.

How it works

The sludge is pumped on to the basin surface, where the reeds grow. The long term sludge reduction works in two ways – dewatering and mineralization of the organic compounds. After filtering the majority of the water runs back to the waste water treatment plant.
In reed bed systems the sludge attains a dry solid content of up to 30 %, and up to 25 % of the organic matter is also removed.

Good working environment

The system is usually controlled from another location and requires only one weekly control-visit of one to two hours. There is no need for chemicals in the process and pathogenic bacteria like coli and salmonella is reduced fast and efficiently. All in all that provides a very safe working environment.

Good options for recycling

The sludge residue also has very good options for recycling, particularly in agriculture where the sludge residue can be used as a valuable fertilizer.

Advantages

  • Up to 30% dry matter
  • Disposable on agricultural land
  • No odours
  • Excellent working environment
  • A minimum of CO2-emissions
  • Silent operation
  • Reliable
  • Low whole life costs
  • Low maintenance cost
  • Low power consumption
