Integrated water resources management

Orbicon has experience introducing integrated water resources management (IWRM) at all appropriate levels of society. This involves institutional aspects in terms of capacity building and training of staff and involved institutions, development of water management plans, development of management infra-structure as well as community level awareness and training. It also involves technical aspects such as data acquisition and handling, monitoring schemes, modelling of water quality and water resources.

Hydrological monitoring and surveys

Since 1917 Orbicon has been directly involved in handling the Danish hydro-metric network. As a specialised data centre, the company offers expertise in:

  • Hydrometric recording networks, design and operation
  • Collection, systematisation and processing of data
  • Training
  • Maintenance of a nation-wide hydrometric database
  • Consultancy services in hydrometric, hydraulics, and operational hydrology

These competencies have been brought into play in various donor projects in places like Ghana, Botswana and the Baltic countries.

Biological monitoring

Terrestrial, fresh water and marine biological monitoring is carried out for national monitoring programmes and for investors as baseline studies. These services include:

  • Monitoring of species and habitats, including ongoing surveillance to assess the impact of for example new infrastructure projects and management procedures following nature restoration activities
  • Monitoring of seabirds, fish, plankton, seabed fauna and marine mammals in relation to off shore activities, especially windmill farms
  • Selection of indicator species/species groups for biodiversity surveys
  • Formulating and implementing monitoring programmes
Strengthening of Water Resources Information Services in Ghana
Orbicon has carried out a project with the aim of developing the use of the national water resources of Ghana, supported through improved water resources information and assessment services. The objectives included development of a well-maintained hydrometric monitoring network satisfying the basic needs of Ghana for hydrometric data, to ensure improved capability of the Hydrology Division to store and process the collected data as a basis for future assessments.
