Reference: Regional Programme for Environmentally Sound Grasshopper Control in the Sahel30-11-2007
SAHEL/NIGER/SENEGAL

The objective of the project is to increase food security and maintain ecological stability of the Sahelian cropping systems by introducing environmentally sound and sustainable integrated grasshopper control in four Sahel countries.

This is accomplished through four groups of activities:

  • Ecological and ecotoxicological risk assessment of different Integrated Pest Management components
  • Development of use strategies for potential Integrated Pest Management components
  • Development of a GIS based decision support tool for Integrated Pest Management
  • Institutional strengthening, training and capacity building of stakeholders.

The project is carried out in a co-operation between scientists and training/capacity building experts from Denmark and West Africa, with National Agricultural Extension Services and NGOs being involved as well. Research activities include large-scale field surveys, field and laboratory experiments. As a result, national programmes, NGOs and farmers will have access to a broader range of tools for grasshopper control, so that the use of chemical pesticides can be reduced. Sustainability will be increased, biodiversity, including birds and other natural enemies of grasshoppers, will be maintained, and the risks for human and animal health reduced.

In co-operation with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (Benin), Centre AGRHYMET (Niger), National Environmental Research Institute (DK).

Funding Agency: DANIDA
