The overall objective of the Project was to support the preservation of biodiversity and promote sustainable development in the cross-border region between Bulgaria and Romania along Danube, through the development of joint activities in the field of nature protection. This has been done by raising awareness within the targeted region, by facilitating an improved co-operation between cross-border counterparts, strong stakeholder involvement and providing the responsible local authorities in Bulgaria and Romania with relevant information and capacity for step-by-step planning, identification, development and implementation of programmes and projects in the fields of biodiversity protection and sustainable socio-economic development. Furthermore the project has provided capacity building on attracting and using funds eligible for the region, and carried out feasible activities, defined within the Phare Small Grants programme for 2005 and 2006.
