Reference: Small Scale Mining (SSM) Project in Zambia30-11-2007
ZAMBIA

Orbicon, in consortium with GEUS, carries out the project ”Training Needs Assessment and Development of Training Courses for Small Scale Miners in Zambia”.

SSM is an activity that is increasingly gaining momentum in Africa. It is mainly practiced in rural areas by artisans who lack required education, training, management skills, essential equipment as well as access to financial resources. Often the mining activities are done with severe consequences to the environment as well as to the miners themselves.

The objective of this project is to support on-going efforts in Zambia to develop the SSM sector. The project will be implemented in three phases: Phase One of the project will consist of an overall assessment, including a training needs assessment, of small scale mining activities within three pre-identified Provinces in Zambia (Southern, Copperbelt and Eastern Province). Phase one activities will include stakeholder workshops, interviews, site-visits and document review. In Phase Two of the project, training manuals and courses will be developed, based on the findings from phase one. Phase Three will consist of Training of Trainers, based on the training manuals elaborated in phase two.”
