Environmental Impact Assessment13-08-2009
A Part of the Mining Process

Environmental concern is a key issue

Local knowledge is essential in environmental and social impact assessments. Doing it right can save a lot of time and money and will reduce the risk of delays for the investors. Considering the environmental issues in the planning context from the beginning is essential in Greenland.

The landscape is vast and the conditions are rough. However, the underground is rich in minerals and mining has been carried out in Greenland for more than 100 years.

Protection of the environment is high on the agenda in Greenland and the Greenland Home Rule requires mining companies to carry out Environmental Impact Assessment EIA with baseline studies 2-3 years before mining activities can commence.

Beginning the biological baseline study

A baseline study documents the state of the environment prior to mining. You have to initiate the biological baseline studies early in the exploration process, as it takes three years to complete it, simply because you need to collect samples from more than one season.

In collaboration with The Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum (BMP) we develop programs for specific areas and specific projects. These EIA programs specify how, where and when different types of samples should be collected.

Social Impact Assessment

Guidelines for Social Impact Assessments are under preparation by BMP. Until these guidelines are completed Orbicon develops Local Use Studies that cover the requirements of the EIA related to mining activities.

Practical solutions

We identify the Valued Ecological Components in cooperation with local authorities and suggest mitigating measures that eliminate or significantly reduce negative impacts.

Experience counts

You will not find a consultant with more experience in the environmental issues of mining in Greenland than Orbicon. And experience matters in fulfilling the requirements of the local government. If the studies are not carried out rightly, the approval process might be prolonged for another year, until you can commence your mining project. We know how it works, and what have to be done to make the process going.

We are currently assisting the following mining companies in Greenland:

  • The Isua Iron Ore Project, West Greenland, London Mining PLC
  • The Kvanefjeld Multi Element Project, South West Greenland, Greenland Minerals and Energy Limited
  • The Tanbreez Project at Kringlerne, South West Greenland, Westrip Holding
