The main project purpose was to produce an Integrated River Basin Management and Restoration Plan as a framework for water management, wetland restoration, nature protection, sustainable agri- and aquaculture in the Dovine River Basin. Important aspects of the plan was to re-naturalise the water flow of the Dovine river (as a prerequisite for the long term protection of the Žuvintas lake, to restore and protect the Žuvintas wetlands and to capacity build and establish cross-sectoral cooperation in integrated nature protection and water management. The project also served as a pilot for a combined implementation of the EU Birds- and Habitats Directive and the EU Water Framework Directive. Defining both the management objectives for the Natura 2000 habitat types and species and the ecological conditions of the surface water bodies became important building bricks for the management plan.
